Sustainable Computing
Principles of Sustainable Computing:
- Keep it simple - Make procedures simple enough that they can
be carried out quickly without a computer. Then, use a computer to automate the procedures.
- Break out of the cycle of continuous upgrades - Most commercial software has higher hardware demands when new versions are released; this puts immense pressure on organizations to continuously upgrade their equipment. Use stable, older versions of commercial software, and use open-source software when possible to acheive a setup that meets your needs and that will run on older computers, and be stable for years.
- Use computers in such a way to become less reliant on non-sustainable resources - For example, use computer recordkeeping to eliminate paper recordkeeping, or use computerized communication to eliminate costly shipping or travel.
- Use open-source software when possible - Only pay for the development of a project under the condition that you will be able to freely use and modify the source code. Don't come to rely on software that is owned and fully controlled by a third-party.
